The Boreal Discovery Centre is expanding its summer programming to better work towards its vision of connecting people to the flora and fauna of the boreal forest, and the culture and traditions of the people who have thrived for generations in the boreal forest.
Eight weeks of five-day camps will be available for up to 10 participants per week and will include lunch. Each day of the week will carry a theme that will help focus the activities in specific areas.
Daily walks through sections of the boreal forest within the Boreal Discovery Centre and along the Millennium Trail will help participants learn to identify plants and trees, observe animal tracks, and collect specimens of leaves, seeds and rocks.
Discussions with participants will help them learn which of the plants and animals are suitable for food, clothing and shelter.
Activities will include making miniature tipis, dying t-shirts with natural dyes, making bird nests out of sticks and grass, and learning how to call certain animals and birds.
Participants will be introduced to Cree language through naming of flora and fauna; and the seven sacred teachings will be interwoven into the daily activities.
Other activities that may be included are storytelling, videos, traditional crafts and photography.
Participants will design and make their own knowledge bundles which they will fill with items they collect. The knowledge bundles will go home with each participant at the end of their five-day camp.
